About Carolina Journeys

Carolina Journeys began in 2004 as a collection of explorations through the Carolina Piedmont β€” a tribute to the hidden paths, forgotten roads, and rich history that crisscross our landscape.

The original articles were written by Tom Fowler, who loved to trace the old ways β€” from the ancient Indian Trading Path to mountain ridges and river fords. His passion for local history, cartography, and the simple joy of following a trail wherever it leads became the foundation of this project.

Now, his sons continue that journey. Based in Durham, NC, we explore the same landscapes with fresh eyes while honoring the spirit of discovery that started it all. We're hikers, trail runners, history enthusiasts, and amateur cartographers β€” always curious about what's around the next bend.

The Name

"Carolina Journeys" captures both the literal travels through the Carolinas and the metaphorical journey of discovery. Some paths are real β€” you can walk them today. Others exist only in historical records or our imagination. Both are worth exploring.

"The journey is the destination."
